Starting gymnastics is an exciting milestone — for both kids and parents. Whether it’s their very first class or a new program, a little preparation can help your child feel confident, comfortable and ready to enjoy the experience.

Here’s everything you need to know before your first visit.

Comfortable Clothing for Movement

Children should wear clothing that allows them to move freely and safely.

For most classes, this includes:

  • Shorts and a t-shirt, or leggings and a fitted top
  • A leotard (optional, but great for gymnastics-specific classes)
  • Hair tied back if it’s long

We recommend avoiding:

  • Dresses or skirts
  • Clothing with zips, buckles or anything that could catch on equipment

Your child doesn’t need anything fancy — just something they can move in easily.

Bare Feet for Safety

Gymnastics is done barefoot.

This helps children:

  • Grip the equipment safely
  • Develop balance and body awareness
  • Move more confidently

Shoes and socks will be removed before entering the gym.

A Water Bottle

Gymnastics is active, and kids can work up a sweat quickly.

Please bring a clearly labelled water bottle so your child can stay hydrated throughout the class. We encourage regular drink breaks, especially for younger children.

A Positive Mindset

This is the most important one.

Every child starts somewhere. Some will jump straight in, while others take a little time to warm up — both are completely normal.

At Reach, we focus on:

  • Building confidence
  • Encouraging effort
  • Creating a positive first experience

Our coaches are there to support your child every step of the way.

What Parents Should Know

If it’s your first time, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Arrive 5–10 minutes early so your child can settle in
  • Let your coach know if your child is feeling nervous
  • Stay and watch (where appropriate) or follow your class guidelines
  • Trust the process — confidence grows over time

For our younger programs like JumpStart, classes are designed to gently build independence while still feeling safe and supported.

What You Don’t Need

We keep things simple.

You don’t need:

  • Expensive uniforms
  • Special equipment
  • Prior experience

Just bring your child, ready to move and have fun.
